surprise! it's a baby jacket!
all one piece, all garter stitch
4 sessions, 2 hrs each
Prequisite Skills: cast on, knit, bind off
| Nothing but knits! A few double decreases here, invisible increases there, a buttonhole or
two... two seams, and voila! this funny-looking object turns into a great-looking baby jacket.
Make it all in one color, one skein of multicolor handpaint, or easy-to-do simple color stripes.
In this class we will use another ingenious Elizabeth Zimmerman pattern to expand our knitting
knowledge. Mitering with decreases and increases lets us turn corners and create more than your
standard rectangular shapes while knitting flat.
Topics: double decreases, invisible increases and how to use them to miter a corner, picking
up stitches, yarn-overs ("yo"), simple buttonholes, garter stitch seaming, simple crochet edging (opt'l).
Materials: Pattern is included in the class cost. The finished measurements for the jacket
depend on the thickness of the yarn used. Pick your jacket size and buy appropriate weight yarn
in one or more colors.
- newborn size: 3 oz. / 85 g. sport-weight yarn (24 st/4 inches)
- 6 to 12-month-old: 8 oz. / 225 g. worsted weight yarn (20 st/4 inches)
The jacket is knit on just one needle. You will need the crochet hook only if you decide to crochet
around the neck.
- 1 24" circular needle in appropriate size for yarn
- stitch markers (split rings or safety pins)
- stitch holders
- darning/tapestry needle
- 5 buttons (pick them out after making the band)
- crochet hook appropriate for yarn weight (optional)
Homework: None before first class.
